The first thing I noticed when I slid behind the wheel of the Polestar 2 had nothing to do with driving. It was the door pull—a blind pocket that swallows your fingers. My hand reached the bottom and encountered not a sharp corner, but a beautifully sculpted concavity. It enveloped my fingertips like a handmade glove. Quick recap. Polestar: The electric performance car brand from Volvo and parent company Geely. Polestar 2: The second production model and first battery-electric to wear the Polestar badge. It follows the Polestar 1, an unusually gorgeous grand touring coupe with a highly advanced hybrid drivetrain. (Inevitably, the next offering will be Polestar 3, a battery-electric crossover based on the Polestar 2.) The Polestar 2 Is a Great Sport Sedan That Just Happens to Be Electric

While the Polestar 1 is an extremely limited-production (and extremely pricey) statement piece, the Polestar 2 is the new brand's first foray into the EV mainstream. On a day that started out drizzly and ended up torrential, I had the opportunity to sample the new Polestar 2, starting in the heart of New York City and reaching out to some of the most delightful mountain roads reachable from the city. The Polestar 2's shape conforms to every cliche about Scandinavian design, all crisp, taut lines and unadorned surfaces. The cruciform Polestar badges on the hood and trunk are devoid of lettering and painted to match the body. The only text on the exterior of the car appears just aft of the front wheels, calling out the model name, the 79-kWh battery, and the 300-kW (or 408-hp) total output of the twin electric motors.

My test vehicle was a fully-loaded Launch Edition example (the only trim line available to start), equipped with the optional $5000 Performance Pack, which adds mechanically adjustable Öhlins dampers, gold-painted four-piston Brembo front brake calipers, and upgraded 20-inch lightweight aluminum wheels wearing Continental SportContact 6 tires with a unique tread pattern. Gold seatbelts and valve stem caps complete the visual accouterment.

Inside, you're greeted with the simplified dashboard that has become an EV hallmark. All HVAC, entertainment, navigation, and car settings adjustments are made from the large, portrait-oriented touchscreen that makes up the center stack—though, thankfully, the basic driver displays reside in a conventional instrument cluster ahead of the steering wheel. A ring-shaped shift lever selects your direction with a satisfying clunk.
