If you worry that the modern race car has strayed too far away from its production roots then GT4 is the class for you. While GT3 cars stray further from their road car counterparts every year, the cars that compete in GT4 look, sound, and drive like cars you might actually see on the street. Variations of Porsche's first two takes on the Cayman GT4 have raced in this category since 2016, but a new high watermark for the 718 Cayman line means a new generation of 718 Cayman racer. This is the 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport, and, like the GT4 RS road car, the headline is the engine. The latest 718 racer gets the entire engine from the latest 911 GT3 Cup, a 4.0-liter flat-six that delivers an overwhelming 500 horsepower. That's ten horsepower less than what it makes in the 911, but also 75 horsepower more than the last Cayman Clubsport and 120 more than the 981-generation Clubsport Porsche introduced in 2016. That startling difference also comes with a wider power band, producing peak torque at 6000 RPM and peak horsepower at 8300 RPM on the way to a redline of 9000 RPM. While the switch to an existing dedicated racing engine does drive up the price, the GT4 RS Clubsport still only sells at $229,000 before taxes. While that number is nothing to scoff at, it is $20,000 less than the previous 982-generation racer and, thanks to the production focus of the entire GT4 class, is not generally followed by the expensive maintenance and upgrades a more finicky GT3 car needs to keep racing for a full season. The last 718 Cayman Clubsport introduced flax fiber materials on the doors and wings to increase sustainability over traditional carbon fiber at a minimal weight cost. That material is now also being used on the fenders, front compartment lid, and steering wheel, part of what Porsche says is an effort to stress test the material on the track before considering road car applications.
As with all GT4 cars, the Cayman will be delivered track-ready with a full roll cage, Recaro racing seat, fire suppression system, and air jack system. Additional accessories can be added for in-race refueling and night racing, if the customer races in a series that demands those things.
