The standard BMW M5 is more than enough car for most. With 600 hp from a twin-turbo V-8, a 2.8-second 0-to-60 time, and a top speed computer-limited to 155 mph, it’s a blistering mix of luxury and performance in an adult-size sedan. But some want more. So the M5 CS is for the lunatics. The unreasonable. The irradiated performance fringe. The people who want next-level exclusivity, ever more power, and even more high-speed ability. These are the nuts who will pay gobs more money to stand out from the crowd, even though the car they paid for isn’t that much better at lapping a racetrack or bombing across a mountain pass. The M5 CS isn’t just some cosmetic package designed by the marketing team to move units. It’s a wildly impressive machine—but so are the other M5s. To create the CS, BMW went through the M5 and cut 230 pounds of fat. Fat as in removing sound deadening and replacing metal pieces like the hood and roof with carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic replicas. It cuts mass and lowers the center of gravity. Beyond that, there are stiffer engine mounts, 10 percent firmer springs in the suspension, stiffer toe-link ball-joint mount bushings, a thicker rear sway bar, a 0.2-inch ride height drop, and more negative camber up front mean the CS is more agile than the “normal” M5 or the Competition.
Back-to-back on a racetrack, the weight loss and suspension upgrades can be felt. While it’s no lightweight, the CS is a more willing dance partner at the limit with relatively neutral handling. It’s a better balanced asphalt muncher that digs in with available Pirelli P Zero Corsa 275/35R-20 front and 285/35R-20 rear tires.
