The Ferrari Roma Is Fast, Classy, and Daily-Useable


In with the old, in with the new. That’s the philosophy behind Ferrari’s new baby GT. Called the Roma, it wraps up some of the latest tech from the 1000-hp SF90 supercar in a set of clothes that recalls the pre-supercar 1950s and 1960s glory days of fast front-engined European grand tourers. Ferrari hopes that elegant mash-up will help hook in new customers to the brand, the kind of people who might otherwise have bought an Aston Martin Vantage or DB11. The kind of people who probably find Ferrari’s other cars, even the entry-level Portofino, a bit too, well, Ferrari. Maranello estimates that fully 20 percent of buyers will skip the yellow prancing horse shields on the front fenders, an option that's almost never declined on Ferrari's other models. Inside, it’s the same fusion. The M-shaped dashboard puts drivers and passenger into distinctly separate zones, like an early Corvette, and the shift quadrant for the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission is styled like a classic open-gate Ferrari manual, a trait we first saw on the SF90.

Also borrowed from the SF90 is a curved high-resolution TFT dashboard display and new touchpad-heavy steering wheel, but in the Roma’s case it’s backed up by a large touchscreen interface in the console.

Compared with the Portofino, the Roma is supposed to be the classier, more glamorous, more luxurious car. The Ferrari Roma Is Fast, Classy, and Daily-Useable


And it feels exactly that. But it’s also more performance-focused, something you can tell before you’ve even turned a wheel: the Roma is the first Ferrari GT car to swap its my-first-Ferrari three-position driving mode manettino for the advanced-placement one found in the mid-engine cars—the one with Race mode.


Ferrari’s not suggesting this car is any kind of dynamic match for its mid-engined F8 Tributo, but spearing through roads framed by acres and acres of vineyards south of Turin, the Roma doesn’t feel like a soft option.
