The Ferrari Daytona SP3 Is a V-12 Tribute to a Glorious Past

The Ferrari Daytona SP3 Is a V-12 Tribute to a Glorious Past

Ferrari's Icona series is designed to distill the spirit of its greatest groups of cars, rather than any one specific car, into one modern, limited-release car that translates past glory into modern performance. The Ferrari Daytona SP3 Is a V-12 Tribute to a Glorious Past

The first two takes on this concept, the Monza SP1 and SP2, turned the concept of open-topped racers from the mid-1950s into a 812-based speedster. This is the third take, inspired by the mid-engined Ferrari prototypes of the late 60s and early 70s. In tribute to that family of cars taking a 1-2-3 at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, the car will be known as the Daytona SP3. The Ferrari Daytona SP3 Is a V-12 Tribute to a Glorious Past

Like those prototypes, the Daytona SP3 is powered by a mid-mounted, naturally-aspirated V-12. This engine is sourced from the 812 Competizione, but intake and exhaust improvements undertaken as part of the shift to a mid-engined layout bring power up to 828 hp. That makes it Ferrari's most powerful internal combustion engine ever, all while revving to 9,500 RPM and producing 514 lb-ft of torque. The added power gets the car to 62 MPH in just 2.85 seconds. While that time cannot quite match what the LaFerrari did in our test back in 2015, it equals the number achieved by the 812 Competizione the SP3 takes its engine from. Styling pays tribute to the company's entire prototype line, with Ferrari directly shouting out all of the 330 P3, 330 P4, 312 P, 512 S, 512 M, 712 Can-Am, and 350 Can-Am. While that group contains no Le Mans winners, it represents every racing car the company built in its legendary rivalries with the Ford GT40 and Porsche 917. Three predecessors to those cars (the 250 P, 275 P, and 250 LM) won Le Mans overall from 1962 through 1964.

As those cars did not have the benefit of the active aerodynamic features that have become so common on modern hypercars, the Daytona SP3 also has only passive aerodynamics. That meant Ferrari made a goal of making the car their crowning achievement in passive aerodynamic efficiency, something it achieved by using specially-integrated "chimneys" to pull low-pressure air out from underneath the car at speed.
