My brother-in-law said something profound last week. No, not that bit about how Pop-Tarts are technically ravioli. It was about cars. He loved his last Honda Ridgeline, a silver-grey, top-of-the-line model that rode like a lifted Accord and could keep a rack of Coors perfectly chilled in its hidden cargo hold. So when the time came last month, he replaced the old truck with a showroom-fresh Ridgeline. His new truck goes about its business with a quiet confidence, same as the old one, but features all of Honda’s latest bells and whistles. So a comment he made caught me off guard.

“I shouldn’t even say this,” he said. “But I miss my old truck. Not much is different on the new one, except now it pisses me off.”


Profound, right?

His grievances center on a few niggling issues, like overzealous driver-assist features, but his biggest problem is the shifter. To shift from park to drive, you no longer grab a shifter, but simply depress a big “D” button. Each button spans a couple inches and has a slight lip around its edge, presumably so you can wedge the Ridgeline into a tight parking spot without having to look away from your mirrors to shift.
