Usually we don't write about small iterative model-year updates, but much of the Road & Track staff is fascinated by the minutiae of the Mazda MX-5 Miata, so here we are. With just a few weeks left of 2021, Mazda has revealed specs and pricing for the 2022 Miata. The biggest news is the fact that the automatic transmission is only available on the top trim GT model. Interestingly, the automatic-transmission Miata Grand Touring costs $33,315 while its manual counterpart is $33,815. Still, a manual Miata is affordable, with the entry level Sport model coming in at $28,315—around $1000 more than last year's model. The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata Drops the Automatic on Two Trims



The Club starts at $31,815, and as this trim gets upgraded Bilstein dampers, a limited-slip differential, a Bose sound system, and wireless Apple CarPlay, it's well worth the extra $3500. The $4500 BBS/Brembo/Recaro package makes a return for 2022, and we'd recommend it for its gorgeous BBS wheels, bigger front brakes, and much upgraded seats. On the mechanical front, the 2022 Miata gets something Mazda calls Kinematic Posture Control (KPC), which brakes the inside rear wheel in high-speed corners to help mitigate body roll and increase traction on corner exit. Mazda also says KPC helps increase steering linearity, and we've reached out to the automaker's engineering guru, Dave Coleman, for more on the system.


The Miata also gets a new color for 2022, Platinum Quartz Metallic, a rather unusual champagne shade. For the Grand Touring, there's also a new interior seat color option, Terracotta, which looks lovely, calling to mind the brown leather of the 2002 Miata SE. (See what I said about Miata minutiae.)
