2023 BMW M2: Everything We Know

Now that BMW has shown the world the new G42 generation 2 Series, fans of the current M2 are excited for the updated sports coupe. While that car is still a ways out, it doesn't mean we don't have some clues as to what we can expect. Here is everything we know so far about the M2's replacement. 2023 BMW M2: Everything We Know

A PROPER M POWERTRAIN

As reported by AutoCar, the 2023 BMW M2 will arrive with a familiar engine to any fan of the current M lineup. Known as the S58, this turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six debuted in the BMW X3 M and X4 M models, before finding service in the new M3 and M4 platforms. Compared to the outgoing N55 and S55 engines in the most recent M2 models, the S58 features twin mono-scroll turbochargers, reworked heads, a new crankcase design, and a more efficient injection system. 2023 BMW M2: Everything We Know

Sources close to the automaker have told the publication that the engine should be good for around 410 hp in the standard M2, while a more powerful M2 CS variant could get as much as 430 hp. That is just 50 hp shy of the full-blown M3 and M4, which should be plenty in the M2’s smaller chassis. 2023 BMW M2: Everything We Know

Better yet, torque is expected to be up as well, with AutoCar reporting a figure of 428 lb-ft of torque on offer from the standard M2 model. The engine is expected to come mated to both a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission, the latter of which replaces the old seven-speed dual clutch unit found in the current car.

The CLAR platform itself has been upgraded and updated, with a 12-percent increase in static torsional rigidity. In fact, many of the components of this new 2 Series are shared with the current 3 Series and 4 Series models.

An improved 50-50 weight distribution should help even the standard car handle quite well, though the M2 will bring some key adjustments of its own. Expect a stiffer suspension and sticky tires as well as a proper M differential out back. Spy photos captured by TopSpeed highlight wider fenders, a typical quad exhaust layout, larger wheels and reworked fascias.

Speaking of the fascia, images posted to the Bimmerpost forum appear to highlight a potential mock-up of what the front end could look like. There aren’t massive kidneys like the ones we’ve gotten recently, though the images haven’t been verified as genuine BMW components.
