Americans don’t like wagons. Americans don’t buy wagons. Finance-minded carmakers respond accordingly, by not sending us the good wagons. Truly, I get it. The E63 sedan outsells the wagon by a wide margin in the U.S., and the Panamera Sport Turismo, the far prettier of the two body styles offered here, don’t move for nuthin. (A family friend owns a large regional Porsche dealership and says he can’t move them for anything compared to the regular body). 2021 Audi RS 6 Avant: First Drive
Me? I’ll always go for the wagon, but then again, myself and others like me represent one half of a Venn Diagram made up of two distinct (and non-intersecting circles): Americans Who Love Fast Wagons, and Americans Who Can Afford Fast Wagons. 2021 Audi RS 6 Avant: First Drive
The only way Audi could make the case to bring the new RS 6 to America in Avant-only form was to “bundle it with the A6 Allroad.” Good enough for me. Let’s hope those with money agree 2021 Audi RS 6 Avant: First Drive.
Look at a photo of the stunning new RS 6. Its widened hips evoking dreams of DTM, filled with monstrous 22 inch wheels and brakes from the Lamborghini Urus. Pop the hood and glance at the not-so-covered 4.0L V8 with it’s “hot-vee” turbochargers.
Frankly, you could probably guess what it’s like to drive, and in most ways, be right. Because the RS 6 Avant drives just like it looks: smooth, slick, fast, and, strong if you’re an enthusiast, sleek, soft, and subtle if you’re not.
There is an argument to be made that the new RS 6 is a car of dual personalities: practical boulevardier and bahn burner, when the truth is only actually half as complex. It’s only one personality, and that is the sort of well-rounded approach to performance that one dreams of from an Audi. This hasn't always been the case, with fast Audis generally letting you down by one weakness or another.
