A hot, impatient afternoon on the interstate. A crimson wedge razors into my mirrors. With those signature hideaway headlights stowed, its expression takes on an air of impatient disdain. Ferrari 308 GTS. To an alumnus of the school of weekday syndication, a foundational machine. The Magnum, P.I. theme song plays in my head. “Put your window down,” I tell my girlfriend in the passenger seat, “and you’ll hear what a sports car is supposed to sound like.” An inspirational moment, save for one detail: I was driving a brand-new Ferrari F8 Tributo, a car that should be the best-sounding machine in any traffic jam. On that measure, it falls short. The 2020 Ferrari F8 Tributo Offers Furious Performance With a Whimper.

The F8 is the latest iteration of Ferrari’s mid-engine, midrange supercar, an update to the 488 that debuted in 2015, itself a reworking of 2010’s 458. Ferrari still uses the platform because it is still fantastic. The 2020 Ferrari F8 Tributo Offers Furious Performance With a Whimper.

The silhouette is familiar, with updated aerodynamics, and the chassis is straight 488 save for retuned magnetorheological dampers. The Tributo packs the 710-hp, 568 lb-ft 3.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 that powered the astounding 488 Pista, but where that raw, lightweight variant aimed for racetrack dominance, the F8 swings for ultimate road prowess. Our long weekend started with hours of freeway driving and peaked on a golden afternoon chasing apexes in the Appalachians. The F8 was unflappable. The steering feels light, direct, and precise; the brakes are urgent, impervious to casual abuse. The Tributo rockets from a standstill to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds but feels even quicker as it reaches triple digits. The speedo sweeps past 100 mph in just over five seconds. The quarter mile falls in 10.2. The 2020 Ferrari F8 Tributo Offers Furious Performance With a Whimper.

That acceleration is almost secondary. The 458 and 488 always impressed with their mix of compliance and grip; the F8 outdoes them both. On the neglected pavement of Pennsylvania coal country, the Tributo’s body motions were prim and polite. This car rewards even the klutziest treatment with buckets of pace, never unpredictable or intimidating. You could whale on it long enough to drain the 22.7-gallon fuel tank twice and hop out feeling fresh enough to do it twice again.

Yet your ears won’t believe what the rest of your senses tell you. Where our favorite V-12 Ferraris scream to redline, the F8 mumbles in baritone. The sound that comes out of the exhaust pipes or radiates through the bulkhead is a muted grumble, frequently choked off during gentle driving by an overzealous active muffler that hushes the engine almost completely.
